Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Working with authors and translators including Tā Tīmoti Kāretu and Tā Pou Temara, Paula Morris and Robert Sullivan, Te Haumihiata Mason and Leon Te Heketū Blake, Auckland University Press publishes major books on te ao Māori and books in te reo Māori. We are long term partners with Kotahi Rau Pukapuka. We are committed to Māori writers, Māori stories and te reo Māori.

We are seeking a Publishing Associate to work with us on this journey. The role provides an outstanding opportunity for a talented individual with a passion for te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and for the world of books to make a substantial contribution to the cultural landscape of Aotearoa.

You will work closely with the Press team, authors, and the wider Māori world. Engaged in all aspects of the publishing cycle (manuscript preparation, editing and proofs, marketing and publicity) and working on a wide variety of books, you will develop significant publishing skills and relationships. Working with the Press director, you will meet with Māori authors and organisations in order to develop new book projects. And you will work with the Press team and external organisations to drive new initiatives developing Māori scholars, writers, and publishers.

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week, on a 36-month fixed-term contract. The salary range for this role is $56,600 - $70,600 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.

We may also consider a part-time appointment for the right candidate, working 22.5 hours per week. The salary per annum will be prorated.

We a small, dynamic group based at the University’s city campus. With significant publishing experience and growing capability in te reo me ōna tikanga, we value manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga and mahi tahi as we work together alongside authors to make great books.

He kōrero mōu | About you

To be successful in this position, you will have:

  • Proficiency in written and oral te reo Māori including experience working on te reo Māori manuscripts.
  • An undergraduate degree and either qualifications or related work experience in te reo Māori scholarship, publishing, writing or teaching.
  • Experience building relationships with stakeholders, including from te ao Māori.
  • Well-honed organisational and communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently while playing a full part in a creative team
