Cope Family Center has been empowering Napa County families to create happy, healthy lives for their children through child abuse prevention, parent education, and self-sufficiency services since 1972. Cope Family Center is a 501(c)3 organization with a current budget of $2.2 million (Fiscal Year 2022.2023), 23 full and part-time staff, an 8-member board, and nearly 100 active volunteers. The nonprofit organization leads a number of community collaborative projects to address systemic issues impacting child maltreatment in the community, as well as being a key participant in disaster response efforts in partnership with Napa County.  The organization’s work is guided by a strategic plan that is utilized to examine and seize opportunities for refining and expanding its programming in alignment with current community needs. Cope’s 51 years of service to the Napa community is a testament to the sustainability of the organization.

About the position: 

The Executive Director (ED) is a full time, salaried, exempt, at-will position reporting to the Cope Family Center Board of Directors. The ED, in concert with the Board, sets the strategic direction of the organization that is guided by Cope’s values. They are responsible for providing visionary leadership of the organization’s mission and are central to moving the agency forward in implementing the internal and external objectives related to the mission and organization’s strategic plan.

More specifically, the Executive Director expertly manages Cope’s growth and long-term sustainability, provides sound fiscal leadership and fiduciary oversight, manages external and internal risks, strengthens accountability throughout the organization and to the community it serves, and achieves and communicates agency outcomes. In the community, the Executive Director forms and maintains strategic partnerships and raises general awareness through advocacy and education to strengthen child abuse prevention services throughout Napa County.

The ED directly supervises a three-person executive team (Program Director, Finance and Administration Director and Development and Marketing Director), leading by example to embody the core values of the organization and helping the leaders excel in their respective areas of responsibilities and as stewards of Cope’s mission. 

Primary Responsibilities 

Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership for the agency by working with the Board of Directors, staff, and community stakeholders to establish, implement and maintain Cope’s long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies, keeping in mind the organization’s values and goals in order to foster growth and sustainability.
  • Provide thought leadership in child abuse prevention issues and trends, along with allied movements such as social justice.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for all staff through use of a distributed leadership model that values the unique perspective of our diverse staff and board members. 

External Relations + Advocacy & Civic Engagement

  • Represent Cope and the families the agency serves with stakeholders—funders, organizational partners, the community, industry, media, government, research/teaching bodies and other agencies.
  • Raise Cope’s visibility as a leader in child abuse prevention and promote the agency’s programs and goals through engagement across social justice sectors in Napa County
  • Cultivate relationships and more formal partnerships with community organizations and other service providers who complement Cope’s programs and services.
  • Respond to policy and political initiatives that impact Cope’s constituents and advocate to policymakers on their behalf.
  • Provide strategic guidance, supervision and support to the Development and Marketing Director to develop and implement strategic marketing and communications campaigns to strengthen public opinion, mobilize support, and increase the visibility of the agency’s role in the community
  • Represent the agency professionally and responsibly in the media and at appropriate public functions, including making effective public presentations.

Fundraising and Development

  • Provide strategic guidance, supervision and support to the Development and Marketing Director, to ensure strategic fundraising and volunteer engagement, to renew existing sources of support and develop new ones. Funding streams include government, private and family foundations, individual donors, corporate sponsorships, and fundraising events
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with prospective funders, major donors and community philanthropists.
  • Work with Director of Finance and Administration, Program Director, and Development Director, as well as partner agencies, to ensure ongoing Government funding, including: identifying opportunities at the local, state and federal levels; developing the case for support; and negotiating final contracts in the best interest of the agency.

Board of Directors

  • Act as liaison to Board and provide staff-support to the Board and its committees
  • Provide financial, program and operational reports to the Board
  • Engage the Board in fiscal, program, and policy oversight, and in strategic planning, fundraising and public relations
  • Work with Board leadership to develop an engaged/active and effective Board and foster regular communication between Board and staff
  •  Assist in identifying and integrating new Board members to achieve their greatest satisfaction and involvement.

Program Management

  • Work in concert with the Program Director to strategically align programming with community needs and organizational mission
  • Provide strategic guidance, supervision and support to the Program Director, who ensures Cope’s evidence-based programs are run to model fidelity and meet the clients’ needs
  • Ensure that programs are in alignment with Cope’s values, vision, and mission.

Financial Management

  • Work with Cope’s Director Finance & Administration, Leadership Team, Finance Committee, and the Board of Directors to prepare the organization’s annual budget and ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines
  • Monitor the financial health of the agency and its programs and develop plans to ensure that adequate funds and reserves are available for Cope to carry out its work in a sustainable and meaningful way
  • Provide strategic guidance, supervision and support to the Director of Finance & Administration.

Human Resources

  • Provide strategic guidance, supervision and support to the Director of Finance and Administration , who attracts, retains and develops a high quality staff
  • Ensure that sound human resource practices are implemented and consistently followed in the agency, such as training, organization culture/development, performance reviews/career planning, and succession planning. 

Management

  • Align resources with Cope’s vision and mission to maximize productivity, maintain service quality, and promote financial health
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team to build agency capacity, infrastructure, processes, systems, and staff capability to support the growth objectives of Cope
  • Oversee an appropriate organizational structure and ensure that the programmatic objectives are supported internally with necessary and appropriate infrastructure, including facilities, finances, technology, communication, etc. 
  • Promote an organizational culture that fosters cooperation, open and frequent communication, teamwork, and a common organizational vision.

Qualifications

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of proven leadership skills developed through experience in senior management positions, including organizational development, strategic planning, personnel management, community leadership, and collaborative ventures with diverse constituents
  • A strong, organized, and disciplined operating executive with proven track record of delivering on strategy and organizational goals while adhering to the mission and values of an organization engaged in improving the circumstances of others
  • Proven ability to build and manage a cohesive, high-performing staff, to develop skills and nurture professional growth of staff members, and to foster a positive organizational culture
  • An appreciation for the mission and growth aspirations of Cope and a strong commitment to children, building healthy, self-sufficient families and preventing child abuse and neglect
  • Superb communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation skills; someone who has routinely spoken in public and on behalf of a company or organization to promote its agenda 
  • Track record in building long-term partnerships and effective relationships with outside organizations, including governmental agencies and corporations
  • Prior experience working with and managing multiple stakeholders including a Board of Directors 
  • Knowledge and understanding of current thought leadership, federal and state policies, and social policy connected to child abuse prevention and success for low-income and underserved families would be considered a plus 
  • Extensive knowledge of nonprofit communities and experience working collaboratively with many diverse agencies and volunteers preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of government funding sources and experience soliciting and securing government grants and contracts.
  • Experience managing a complex budget
  • Adept at media relations
  • Exceptional presentation, written, and verbal skills in English, and ideally in Spanish as well.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field required; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft and Google suite of programs
  • Occasional work on weekends and evenings required
  • Valid California Driver’s License and own mode of transportation
  • Must pass DOJ and FBI fingerprinting and background check
  • Other tasks as assigned.
