Job Description

Summary: This position provides technical support for the Department of Art, Design, and Music in the College of Arts and Sciences. This is a part-time (20 hours/week), 12-month staff position that reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and works closely with the Executive Director and Studio Art faculty in the department. This position is not exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible to earn overtime pay for hours worked above 40 in a single work week. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain woodshop, metal work, and pottery equipment
  • Assist in the development of shop safety standards, including inventory & storage of materials and training students on equipment operation
  • Assist in building shop organization elements like carts, shelves, and other items that help keep our studios safe and cared for
  • Oversee/supervise open studio hours
  • This position involves occasional evening and weekend duties, such as assisting in kiln firings

 Non-Essential Duties: Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and/or university needs.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Experience working in a wood shop with other people of varying skill levels
  • Experience operating a variety of wood shop equipment (e.g., table saw, radial arm miter saw, bandsaw, drill press, sanders, blast cabinet, drills, nail guns, angle grinders, and various hand tools)
  • Ability to move heavy objects, including 50-100lb bags of raw materials, full sheets of plywood, firebricks, firewood, etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills and experience interacting with multiple constituencies (faculty, staff, students)
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing tasks and demands and changing priorities
  • Possess a strong, self-driven work ethic that includes taking initiative and seeing assignments through to completion with attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to accept direction on assignments and respond appropriately to feedback

  • Bachelor’s degree in studio art or the equivalent in experience and education.
