Our Graduate Development Programme  

Our 24-month Graduate Development Programme (GDP) provides you with a structured learning environment to help you become a well-rounded consultant and accelerate your career.

The GDP starts with a formal induction, giving you the opportunity to start building your internal networks and deepen your understanding of Turner & Townsend and your service area.

On joining you will be provided with a structured development plan which introduces you to the key business, technical and commercial competencies graduates need to succeed at Turner & Townsend. This gives you the necessary tools to manage and monitor your personal and professional development and progress. Throughout the programme you will be partnered with a Graduate Development Manager who will provide support and guidance to ensure you are on track.

As well as ‘on-the-job' learning, you will benefit from technical and behavioural training, providing you with the knowledge and skills to support you in your personal development. Alongside this you will be given the opportunity to pursue professional qualifications with organisations such as RICS, APM, CMI, IMEA, ICE and CIOB (depending on your technical discipline).

The GDP provides:

  • A platform to enhance knowledge and gain first-hand experience; 
  • A plan to support and capture your learning and development needs and achievements; and,  
  • The tools to track and report your personal development. 

Job Description

As part of the Project Controls team, you’ll gain experience in helping develop and control a projects overall delivery. The controls team focuses on minimising a projects exposure to reputational risks and aims to provide greater confidence in the delivery and return of clients’ investments. This may be through improving a projects schedule, helping keep track and reducing costs or even mitigating and managing risks.

Working in risk management for example, may mean being involved in meetings with suppliers to understand the current risks facing the supplier and the project. They may then have a meeting with their risk team to categorise the severity and likelihood of each risk and describe some mitigations of each. A cost and schedule impact of each risk can be understood from liaising with the respective teams. A report detailing the status of the risks, highlighting the most significant, may then be created to show to risk management.

With this diverse range of functions to learn about and get involve with, you will get the chance to uphold each part of a projects delivery to help support the achievement of project objectives across a multitude of sectors such as rail, power, aviation, and utilities. What’s more, you’ll have the opportunity to work UK’s biggest infrastructure projects including Heathrow, Ministry of Defence, HS2 and many more…

If you are interested in risk, project planning, cost control or implementing the latest project management software, then a career in controls and performance may be for you. In project controls you’ll get the chance to work across a multitude of functions to do just that:

Risk: Work across the risk function enabling you to monitor, analysis and mitigate risks in high scale projects.

Planning & Scheduling: Help schedule and plan some of the UK’s most complex and advanced infrastructure developments using software such as Primavera 6 and Microsoft Project.

Cost: Develop your knowledge of finance software systems such as CAPEX, OPEX and lifecycle estimating, allowing you to Interrogate million-pound cost estimates and roll out the processes and tools necessary to track and control project performance.

Performance reporting: Build and uphold strategic reporting systems and procedures that will enable you efficiently organise a projects delivery.

Change control: Understand, submit and control the development and transformation of projects through change processes for any changes within a project that need to be initiated into the delivery.

Baseline Development: Understand business strategy and project requirements. Agree the project structure and define a Statement of Works (SOW).

Document and data management: Ensure documents are controlled, accurate, current and published to communicate the right information.

Performance assurance: Uphold Turner & Townsend’s eight critical success factors and alignment to project or programme objectives.

  • Keen to help assist and ensure the successful delivery of project plans
  • Holds a keen eye for observing details and the smaller thing

Qualifications

  • 2:1 or above in your undergraduate degree.
  • 2:2 or above in undergraduate degree if you hold a RICS accredited Masters or construction related masters.
  • Right to live and work in the UK (we are unable to offer visa sponsorship).

In some regional roles being able to drive will be necessary due to the location of client offices.  Please also note this is not a remote role as we operate a hybrid working approach you will need to be willing and able to work in a Turner & Townsend office or a client site. 

To be considered for roles in the Defence arena you will need to pass both a Baseline Personnel Security Standard check and UKSV SC clearance – this process will initiated once you have accepted an offer and have indicated you are happy to go through these checks.  A summary of the checks involved can be found here.
