Job Description

We’re looking for an experienced Director of Data Engineering & Analytics with a strong foundation in data engineering, data analytics, system design, and technical leadership. At our core, we are a data and analytics company, and as such, this is a critical technical role in the company. The Data Platform is an essential component of our data strategy and overall ecosystem. We are looking for a strong technology influencer who can integrate effectively into the organization, combining facilitation skills with a results orientation to deliver excellence and execution.

As the Director of Data Engineering & Analytics, reporting to the company’s CTO, you will be responsible for leading the data engineering and analytics team in developing the company's data platform solution and services. In this role, you will lead the data platform strategy to provide technical solutions and infrastructure that enable data integrations, data services, self-service analytics, AI/ML Ops, business intelligence, and data-driven saas products and services. You will be a technical owner and subject matter expert on the various workstreams under the data platform roadmap. You will improve the productivity of our data teams by helping to prioritize and unblock the team in tier day-to-day work. You will bring critical technical leadership and thinking to the table, collaborating with executive leadership, business subject matter experts, product managers, and other engineering leaders to create strategically sound Target State Architectures.

This position can be based out of our corporate headquarters in Pleasanton, CA, or can be remote within the US with periodic travel to our corporate headquarters as prudent and necessary.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Data Engineering & Analytics function while directly managing both data engineering and data analytics staff
  • Attract, grow, and retain top data engineering and analytics talent
  • Own the design, build, and scaling of our internal data platform by guiding the team on the right architectural patterns, ELT/ETL frameworks, data integration interfaces, and business intelligence & analytics solutions 
  • Work with the leadership team, data experts, product managers, and engineering teams to collect the right data and build foundational data models for various data products
  • Take the lead in driving better data quality & reliability of data pipelines through automation and monitoring
  • Help set strategic direction for data governance and data operations practices
  • Understand the data needs of the Data Science team and help operationalize the ML pipelines 
  • Design & Implement security and compliance controls per applicable standards and regulations like SOC, ISO, GDPR, etc.
  • Establish best practices related to development processes with a metrics mindset
  • Prioritize requests from multiple stakeholders and manage expectations on deliverable scope and schedule
  • Own vision for self-serve reporting for the internal teams and build the necessary infrastructure to support the same
  • Work with Cloud & DevOps team to setup appropriate observability and availability metrics for the data infrastructure
  • Monitor billing & usage of the cloud data infrastructure and devise strategies for cost optimization
  • Leverage outside engagements as necessary to accelerate the development of data products and solutions

Qualifications

  • BS/MS/Ph.D. in a quantitative field
  • 10+ years of experience as an individual contributor and/or manager in business intelligence, data engineering, data analytics, and data science
  • 2+ years experience in a management position with direct reports in data engineering, data analytics, and/or data science
  • Extensive experience in designing and building data lakes, data warehouses, and data analytics or business intelligence solutions
  • Extensive experience in SQL, Python, and other scripting languages used for data engineering
  • Extensive experience in developing and maintaining ETL processes that are robust, scalable, and flexible
  • Extensive experience in designing robust systems and processes to validate data quality, maintain the lineage, and establish high trust in data
  • Experience working with external data providers/sources 
  • Experience extracting data from multiple disparate sources, including Web, PDF, CSV, and XLSX
  • Experience in at least one of the major cloud environments (AWS preferred)
  • Experience in cloud data platforms such as Snowflake (preferred), BigQuery, Databricks, or Redshift
  • Experience working with data visualization tools such as Tableau
  • Experience working with Docker/Kubernetes/Containers 
  • Experience with designing and developing Enterprise Data Models 
  • Knowledge of various data storage file formats and what works well in which scenario
  • Familiarity with trending data topics like Data Lakehouse, Data Mesh, etc.
  • Familiarity with agile software development practices

Bonus Points

  • Experience in the Life Sciences domain
  • Experience managing the technical launch of data / ML products and subsequent releases while refreshing and scaling data models with additional data 
  • Experience working with unstructured or semi-structured data and human-in-the-loop data operations
  • Experience with distributed systems
  • Experience setting up MLOps for deploying machine learning models to the production environment
  • Experience with NLP (Natural Language Processing)
  • Understanding of Domain-Driven Design Principles and common Software Design Patterns
