Job Description

About the Job:

The Events Manager is responsible for managing a portfolio of high-profile AFTD events, as identified and assigned by AFTD’s Events Director. This portfolio will include signature AFTD events, including meetings for researchers and educational conferences.

The Events Manager is responsible for managing, stewarding and cultivating national, branded fundraising campaigns as well as targeted independent, volunteer-led events, and AFTD-hosted fundraising Special Events such as Driving Hope.

They will supervise and support the Fundraising Coordinator and Events Coordinator, and work in close collaboration with AFTD’s Advancement team and hundreds of volunteer hosts to lead in-person, online and social They and their staff will provide support as needed for events directed by the Events Director, including but not limited media driven Grassroots Events campaigns and fundraising events. The Events Manager will lead, organize, and promote various events, and will also be responsible for attending events to provide support and strengthen relationships with targeted key fundraisers. to Hope Rising. 

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 Essential Job Functions

  • Support AFTD Special Events: In collaboration with AFTD’s Events Director, lead AFTD’s implementation efforts for Special Events. Provide guidance and support for targeted event chairs, co-chairs and other identified entities to foster successful, positive events consistent with AFTD’s brand and culture.
  • Support the Events Director: In sustaining and building on the Hope Rising Benefit and seek and advocate for additional Special Events opportunities that can efficiently leverage and channel community interest in a manner consistent with AFTD’s brand and sense of best practices for events.
  • Manage AFTD’s National GRE Campaigns: Develop and lead the implementation of formalized, replicable processes for AFTD’s primary volunteer-led fundraising campaigns. Propose and implement innovations to our primary Grassroots Events campaigns (currently: With Love, AFTD-Team Race Season, Food for Thought, and Independent Events) each year, to ensure sustainability and longevity. In collaboration with the Events Director, and with support from the Fundraising Coordinator, foster lively, evolving campaigns to encourage community participation and involvement in supporting AFTD’s mission. Provide annual opportunities for the Advancement team (and other staff as identified) to travel and represent the organization at Grassroots Events.
  • Steward and Cultivate Independent Events: Lead AFTD’s efforts to support Independent Event fundraisers that have been designated as high performing (or have been identified as prospects for the same), providing guidance and problem-solving assistance as such events move from concept to completion. Guide the Fundraising Coordinator’s and Events Coordinator’s efforts to steward and cultivate independent events and help to identify events with the potential for greater results from fundraising and awareness perspectives.

 Other Job Functions

  • Provide proactive recommendations to the Director of Marketing and Communications, Social Media & Online Communications Manager, and other departmental staff regarding AFTD’s use of social media and other digital platforms (including but not limited to Classy) to foster a culture of continuous and expanding engagement for our volunteer-led fundraising efforts.
  • Actively contribute to and support AFTD’s fundraising plan.
  • With support from the Fundraising Coordinator and Events Coordinator, proactively manage AFTD-branded materials for Special and Grassroots Events. With support and guidance from the Director of Marketing & Communications and other communications staff, proactively ensure that all materials and communications adhere to AFTD’s branding, stylesheet and overall quality standards.
  • Provide support to the Development Department in the planning and coordinating of major donor-focused gatherings/“friend raisers” as requested.
  • Proactively promote the inclusion of Grassroots and Special Events volunteers and chairs within cross-functional AFTD activities.
  • Responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and managing vendor relationships as assigned.
  • Creates and manages budget for assigned events, track and prepares event closeout budget reports for management review.
  • Conscientiously follow company policies and practices and care for company property.
  • Travel for local and national AFTD events, and for organizational meetings and events as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has supervisory responsibilities for the following roles:

  • Fundraising Coordinator
  • Events Coordinator

Qualifications

Requirements for the position:

  • Bachelor's degree, or high school diploma with a minimum of 5 years of relevant volunteer leadership and fundraising experience may also be considered
  • Minimum of four years of experience in a leading role for fundraising, planning grassroots or special events, marketing or social media. This can include volunteer activity.
  • Proficient in database management
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Salesforce or other CRM experience required
  • Communication, marketing or public relations experience a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and comfort working with a wide-ranging community online, by phone and in person
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and organization; strong demonstrated ability to work independently and in groups.
  • Travel throughout the continental US is an important component of this position; 10-12 trips per year, including weekend travel

          o    Provide active support of Grassroots Events, which are frequently outdoors and are subject to the  climate of the day; standing should be expected throughout the majority of the day during these events.
