About the role:
The Manager, Research Projects will support the Senior Director, Scientific Initiatives (SDSI) to execute on projects that convene research stakeholders and develop shared tools and understanding on common issues, particularly within areas of precompetitive collaboration and translational & clinical research. They will provide skills in scientific understanding, project management, and communication to strengthen capacity for current and evolving AFTD initiatives such as the FTD Treatment Study Group meeting, the annual Holloway Summit, and emergent, time-limited projects.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions

Scientific management of FTD Treatment Study Group (FTSG) meeting and Holloway Summit

  • Manage the development of agenda for annual AFTD scientific meetings (FTSG and Holloway Summit) in close partnership with the SDSI and with extensive input from internal and external experts. For example, help develop scientific agendas by synthesizing the feedback of internal and external leaders, monitor logistical feasibility of a given agenda, and investigate potential scientific topics and speakers for inclusion. Correspond with speakers and attendees
  •  Collaborate with event planners to ensure that meeting logistics align with the needs of the meeting goals.
  •  Support communications related to AFTD scientific events, including preparation of reports to AFTD Board, donors, and staff as well as collaboration with Communications colleagues for newsletters, social media, and other tools.
  •  After each meeting, manage the writing and editing of multi-author scientific publications to capture the content and consensus of the meeting.
  •  Develop, monitor, and report performance indicators for the scientific meetings.

Project management for the annual meeting of the FTD Prevention Initiative (FPI)

  •  Under the direction of the SDSI, provide project management support to the FPI Executive Team in organizing an annual meeting of the investigators of FTD international cohorts.

Manage emergent precompetitive collaborations

  • In partnership with the SDSI and other colleagues, manage emergent opportunities for AFTD to support the clinical research field via precompetitive collaboration with participation of experts from biopharma, regulatory science, academia, and non-profit/advocacy organizations.

Communication with the Medical Advisory Council and other scientific leaders

  • Take the minutes at meetings of the AFTD Medical Advisory Council and related scientific committees
  • Support periodic updates to the Medical Advisory Council and other key opinion leaders

Other Job Functions

  •  Represent AFTD at conferences
  •  Serve as an internal expert on FTD science
  •  Conscientiously follows company policies and practices and takes care of organizational property.
  •  5-15% travel for conferences and meetings required, pending the status of the pandemic
  •  Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  This position has no supervisory responsibilities

Qualifications

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this role:
• Doctorate degree preferred in a relevant field such as neuroscience, translational, clinical, or regulatory sciences.
• A Bachelor’s degree with both project management training and experience in a related scientific field will be considered.
• 4+ years of project management experience required
• 2+ years of scientific communication experience required
• Experience in health field/rare disease organizations a significant plus
• Knowledge of drug and biomarker development, clinical trials, and regulatory sciences strongly preferred
• Demonstrated abilities to plan and execute highly collaborative programs required
• Scientific acumen, capable of rapidly learning and distilling scientific concepts required
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, adaptable to different audiences and settings required
• Able to work collaboratively and effectively with cross-functional teams required
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required
• Flexibility, willing to adapt to work on a variety of evolving and emergent projects; lending support as needs arise
• Ability to approach work with a pleasant and professional demeanor required
• Comfort with Microsoft Office Suite required, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
