Johnston Health Foundation (Foundation) exists to educate and to inspire support for UNC Health Johnston, an affiliate of UNC Health.  In the early 1980s, a group of community members and physicians launched the Dr. Hubert Poteat Golf Tournament to honor the first surgeon recruited to then-Johnston Memorial Hospital. The event was one of the first official fundraisers for the hospital, and it set the course for establishing the Foundation in 1992. 

Since then, the Foundation has raised millions of dollars to support the patients, programs, and services of UNC Health Johnston. The Foundation is led by a Board of Directors who are actively engaged in the mission to improve the health and well-being of the people in their communities by providing meaningful opportunities to give of one's time, talent, and treasure.

The Foundation partners with UNC Health Johnston to foster philanthropic support for four areas of focus:

  1. Access to Care: Working to ensure that everyone can access care regardless of their ability to pay
  2. Holistic Care: Supporting UNC Health Johnston patients with all aspects of care and teammates (staff) with professional advancement and well-being needs
  3. Innovative & Preventative Care: Funding cutting-edge programs and awareness initiatives designed with vulnerable populations in mind
  4. End-of-Life Care: Advocating and fundraising for hospice and bereavement support, ensuring that all patients receive quality end-of-life care with comfort, compassion and dignity

The Foundation seeks to be a philanthropic leader and a catalyst for collaborations that result in equitable access to care and healthier communities.

The Community | Smithfield and Clayton, North Carolina

Smithfield is located along the Neuse River in Johnston County, NC.  The quaint downtown has an historic district and is home to Ava Gardner Museum.  The town hosts an annual Ham and Yam Festival that attract many visitors.  Located just 30 minutes southeast of Raleigh, near the intersection on Interstates 95 and 40.

UNC Health Johnston also has a facility in Clayton, NC.  Clayton is just 15 minutes from the Triangle and offers an array of great outdoor activities – hiking, biking, and parks.  For entertainment the town has an art trail around downtown, a wine and shine trail and The Clayton Center which offers live concerts.

Johnston County is one of the fastest growing areas in the state. It is attractive to many for its affordable cost of living, pleasant landscape, and growing business opportunities.

Job Description

The Director of the Johnston Health Foundation (JHF) leads all aspects of the organization, including fundraising and revenue generation, financial stewardship, organizational and programmatic leadership, maintenance of a strong relationship with UNC Health Johnston, external engagement with the community and working with the Board to set and implement strategic growth and operational goals.  The Director works to seek funding through all possible funding sources, including but not limited to individual and corporate donors, and federal and private grants. 

The Director is a member of the hospital management staff and reports to the Vice President, External Affairs. The Director supervises the Development Specialist, Development Analyst, and Accounant.

Essential and ResponsibilitiesDuties

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive resource development plan, including annual fund, planned giving, major gifts, capital campaigns and special projects, corporate and foundation solicitations, and events related to resource development.
  • Represent UNC Health Johnston and JHF as required in a fundraising capacity at special civic, social, and religious functions.
  • Serve as the principal person responsible for the one-on-one solicitation of major gifts.
  • Develop and administer fundraising policies and procedures, as well as annual reviews.
  • Develop and monitor annual department goals.
  • Responsible for department financial management to include the development of the annual budget, investment policy, and development of monthly financial reports.
  • Develop and maintain a positive and harmonious working relationship with hospital staff, Foundation Board, Hospital Board, medical staff, senior leadership, and community.
  • Serve as a public advocate for JHF, discussing significant public foundation developments with hospital staff, Foundation Board, and community groups.
  • Provide ongoing education and overall guidance to the Foundation Board and its committees.
  • Responsible for overall strategy for all foundation internal and external events.
  • Play a key role in providing overall concept and messaging for the Foundation’s marketing collateral and content for all communication channels.
  • Oversee organization of all fundraising projects and donor recognition programs such as the constituent relationship management process and proper stewardship of gifts.
  • Capitalize on grant funding opportunities on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices in fundraising and development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree desirable
  • Three years’ experience in development; health care resource development is desirable
  • Three years’ administrative experience
  • Significant experience and success with solicitation of major gifts
  • Collaborative leader/manager who has success with working as a team
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Previous supervisory and management experience preferred
  • Donor database experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software
  • Knowledge of financial management
