The Faculty of Law

Waipapa Taumata Rau - The University of Auckland is Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading university and one of the world’s major research universities.  Te Wāhanga Ture - The Auckland Law School  is ranked in 2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject as the best place to study law in New Zealand based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact; and again in the top 100 Law Schools internationally (QS 66=). It is the largest law school in New Zealand and has an international reputation for academic excellence.

The Faculty currently comprises some 50 full-time academic staff, including 15 professors, with expertise across a broad range of subject areas. It has high entry standards for its LLB and LLB (Honours) degrees and has an outstanding postgraduate programme.

The School enjoys excellent international links and a strong relationship nationally with the legal profession and judiciary. It is supported by the staff and resources of the Davis Law Library, New Zealand’s leading legal research library. Leading scholars from top overseas universities often visit the Law School and teach courses for the LLM programme.

The Faculty hosts te Puna Rangahau o te Wai Ariki | the Aotearoa New Zealand Centre for Indigenous Peoples and the Law; the New Zealand Centre for Legal Theory; the New Zealand Centre for Environmental Law; the New Zealand Centre for Human Rights Law, Policy and Practice; the New Zealand Centre for ICT Law, and the New Zealand Centre for Law and Business. The Faculty also enjoys a close relationship with the Legal Research Foundation, whose journal, the New Zealand Law Review, is produced within the Law School.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The Faculty is looking for high quality researchers and innovative teachers who are prepared to take leadership roles within the faculty and university. Māori and Pasifika applicants are particularly encouraged to apply.

All Faculty members are expected to contribute to the foundational courses, and to develop and teach specialist elective courses.

The foundational courses include: Law and Society, Legal Method, Legal Foundations, Criminal Law, the Law of Torts, Public Law, the Law of Contract, Land Law, Equity, Jurisprudence, Legal Ethics, and Legal Research, Writing and Communication. From 2025 tikanga Māori will also form part of the foundational courses.

The successful applicant may teach and research in any area of law. Applicants from all areas within the law discipline are welcome, however, the Faculty is especially interested in applicants with expertise in public and private law, including public law, human rights law, contract, tort, property law, company law, banking and finance, law and technology, employment law, environmental law, climate change law and tikanga Māori. 

Applications at any level from Pouako/Lecturer through to Ahorangi/Professor are welcome.

Remuneration: L1 - L7 ($86,979 – $103,904), SL1 - SL8 ($110,579 – $138,508), AP – P (from $144,526).

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), permanent position. Part-time appointments may be available by negotiation.

He kōrero mōu | About you

You are an energetic, can-do person with an LLB or equivalent and post-graduate law qualifications. A PhD in Law or another discipline is highly desirable. Teaching experience at undergraduate and post-graduate level is desirable.

For Professor and Associate Professor, a substantial track record in the publication of research monographs and articles in leading international journals or similar is necessary. For these roles it is desirable to have experience of successful PhD supervision. Professor and Associate Professor applicants will also be expected to demonstrate an aptitude to undertake significant service roles commensurate with seniority.
