How we work

We’re the ‘user-centered design partner’ for the Home Office, Department for Education, the NHS and others. We also work with local government, charity and private sector organisations.

Sometimes we’re embedded in client teams for projects. You’ll move on to different sectors after 3 - 12 months because we want you to get a variety of experiences, from applying GDS (government digital service) standards, to improving customer buy-in.

Beyond individual projects, Snook’s Service Designers support each other at weekly remote meetups where we share our work, discuss its wider implications, and learn about methods.

You’ll also broaden your skills by working closely with members of the User Research and Digital teams, including interaction and content designers, developers and user researchers.

All of our Service Designers are supported by more senior members of the Service Design team. They look after your wellbeing, help you set goals and objectives and provide feedback to help you grow.

Job Description

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for a skilled practitioner with significant post-study experience in delivering service design work. The focus of your role will be to create end-to-end designs for services which are inclusive, accessible and planet-friendly. You’ll often be working with multidisciplinary teams on complex projects, so autonomy and project management are important.

We work with a broad range of clients, some of whom are completely new to user-centred design (UCD). This means you’ll also play a key role in championing our UCD approach.

The role may also involve these activities:

  • Developing Snook practice – Taking part in refining the way our disciplines work together, and progressing the way Snook does inclusive, sustainable design.

  • Supporting new business – Spotting opportunities to help clients (and potential clients), contributing to proposals and attending pitches.

Qualifications

We’d like to hear from you if you have skills or experience in some of these areas:

  • Research – From initial design research to user testing, you contribute to planning and conducting the right research for each challenge. You can synthesise research into actionable tools for design. Beyond user needs, you seek and articulate the key factors affecting a service and its use.

  • Strategy & systems thinking – You’re used to mapping and analysing strategies, systems and scenarios. You use your grasp of how services fit into wider contexts to form well-grounded strategic recommendations.

  • User-centred journeys – You choose and use approaches to designing great end-to-end experiences that achieve the right outcomes.

  • Facilitation and presentation – You design and deliver effective, engaging workshops – whether the goal is to open things up or reach consensus. Your presentations inspire clients, stakeholders and other colleagues.

  • Visual communication – You use well-designed visuals to make clear and compelling points. You visually structure complex information in an attractive and digestible way.

  • Written communication – You choose the right written formats and structures for each occasion. Your writing is clear, concise and persuasive.

  • Recommendation & implementation – You work with clients and stakeholders to identify what change is possible and how to bring it about. This includes outlining practicalities such as timeframes and resource implications, and identifying future phases of work.

  • Prototyping – You contribute to scoping the right prototyping for each project stage. You can work across disciplines to design, build and test prototypes that contribute to project outcomes.

  • Project and team management – You have experience of project management and can support project leads to deliver on time and on budget. You’re happy supporting internal and client teams.
