We’ve designed user-centred services for government agencies including: Home Office, Department for Education (DfE), NHS Digital and NHSX. 

We’ve also designed digital products and solutions for organisations including Lloyds, Cancer Research UK and Comic Relief.

  • Location: UK, home and office working - London and Glasgow based staff are expected to regularly use our studios for collaboration, quiet working and meeting others. For remote staff we have optional access to business lounges across the UK.
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Salary: London: £50,000 - £65,000  Rest of UK:  £46,000 - £59,800 - Salary will be dependent on Experience in the role.

We’re the ‘user-centered design partner’ for the Home Office, Department for Education, the NHS and others. We also work with local government, charity and private sector organisations

This means we’re embedded in their teams for projects and you’ll move on to different sectors after 3 - 12 months. We want you to get a variety of experiences, from applying GDS (government digital service) standards to improving customer buy-in.

Beyond individual projects, Snook’s Service Designers support each other at weekly remote meetups where we share our work, discuss its wider implications, and learn about methods.

Job Description

We’re looking for a service designer who can do these things:

  • Leading and directing projects – You’ll lead multidisciplinary teams and clients in the pursuit of inclusive, accessible and planet-friendly services. Some projects will be complex or high value.

  • Team support and management – You’ll help to support the service design team by inspiring and line managing team members, including overseeing appraisals and professional development.

  • Defining and refining practice – You’ll help to define the way our disciplines work together, and progress the way Snook does inclusive, sustainable design. 

  • Supporting new business – You’ll help Snook find and win work by spotting opportunities with clients and helping with proposals and pitches.

Qualifications

We’d like to hear from you if you have skills or experience in some of these areas:

  • Research – You plan and direct the right kinds of research for each project. You uncover and articulate the key factors affecting the service and its use.

  • Strategy & systems thinking – Familiar with systems thinking, you lead teams and clients to map and analyse strategies, systems and scenarios. You’re experienced in forming well-grounded strategic recommendations.

  • User-centred journeys & experiences - You choose the right approaches to lead projects to outcomes that are great for the user, feasible to implement, and fit the client’s strategic vision.

  • Facilitation - You lead teams to design and deliver engaging and effective workshops.  You support colleagues to present to and inspire clients, stakeholders and other colleagues.

  • Visual communication - You lead teams to make clear and compelling points through well-designed visuals.

  • Written communication - You guide teams on the most appropriate written formats and structures for each project.  You create and oversee clear, concise writing.

  • Recommendation & implementation - You work with stakeholders to identify what change is possible and how to bring it about. This includes outlining timeframes and resource implications, and identifying future phases of work.

  • Prototyping - You lead teams, clients and stakeholders to scope targeted prototyping exercises. You work across disciplines to design, build and test prototypes that contribute to project outcomes.

Clearance

All offers are subject to satisfactory security vetting and reference checks. As standard, all roles undertake a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check. As a provider of services to the UK Government, where necessary we adhere to HMG’s personnel security and vetting policy requiring that minimum personnel security controls are checked as specified in the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Some roles may require national security vetting clearance at the Security Check (SC) level and Non-Police Personnel Vetting (NPPV) Level 3. Where applicable local (non-UK) security checks and vetting schemes will be used to provide sufficient personnel security controls.
