Job Description

Reporting to the Director of IT, the Systems Administrator works directly with Nashville Symphony staff to meet their IT needs, including hardware, software and systems access.

  • Responsible for the effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure.
  • Deploy the release of new technologies as well as design, install, configure, maintain and perform system integration testing of PC/server operating systems, related utilities and hardware.
  • Diagnose hardware and software problems and replace defective components.
  • Research, evaluate and recommend software and hardware products.
  • Provide new hardware specifications to users based on application needs; install new servers and maintain the server infrastructure.
  • Define procedures for monitoring, evaluating, diagnosing and establishing work plans to resolve system issues.
  • Perform troubleshooting for complex hardware, software and network problems.
  • Establish and manage regular data, program and systems backups; create and regularly test disaster-recovery procedures and systems.
  • Employ methods to ensure network systems security and integrity; monitor systems usage, performance and security logs; report policy infractions to supervisor; maintain and continually update system documentation and software licensing information.
  • Assure compliance to all software licensing terms, upgrades and maintenance agreements; maintain an inventory of all software, hardware, licenses and peripherals.
  • Establish and maintain end user network accounts and assign security privileges using group policy and active directory as authorized; ensure that end user access to available systems is maintained.
  • Install and configure end user hardware (desktop, printer, telephone, wireless, ticket scanners) and peripheral devices as directed; coordinate the setup and use of hardware and software to assist with the special needs of other departments or rental clients as directed.
  • Provide on-site or remote diagnostic support to staff for answering hardware-related and application software questions; receive, prioritize, document and resolve end user help requests; maintain a high level of end user satisfaction with such resolutions; recommend alternate application methods for greater utilization and efficiency.
  • Maintain library of application documentation for staff use.
  • Provide hardware and application software training for end users; ensure continued skills development in support of employment of new technologies and evolving use or upgrade of general application software.
  • Work with the Director of IT to work through and support company-wide IT needs, projects and issues; recommend changes to IT policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required, preferably in a technical discipline such as Computer Science or Management Information Systems.

Experience

 

  • A minimum of 1-3 years of Systems Administration experience.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of large-scale projects in the non-profit industry.
  • Experience managing enterprise-wide infrastructure systems for an organization as well as web-based and traditional application development functions.
  • Understanding of Internet, firewall and network security technologies.
  • A vision of how emerging technologies may affect our business environment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, project management and leadership skills
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects.
  • General understanding of WiFi, broadcast and video distribution systems.
  • The ideal candidate will be a hands-on technician, technically sound, with strong management skills.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to translate technical terminology to lay terms.
  • Ability to work independently and use independent judgment while keeping supervisor informed of work activity and issues.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex code and documents. Ability to create routine and complex procedures, reports and documents. 
  • Multi-tasking skills and ability to balance a sense of urgency and low priorities without displaying panic are essential.
  • Ability to maintain the strictest of confidence as needed. 
  • A good sense of humor is an added plus.
  • From time to time, ability to work flexible hours depending on operational needs of the staff or required maintenance of systems.
