Job Description

The Assistant Medical Physicist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Assistant Medical Physicist assists the Medical Physicists in the general medical physics duties pertaining to operating a Radiotherapy clinic and Radiology department. This includes, but is not limited to: treatment planning, patient positioning, radiation protection, machine and patient specific quality assurance in close collaboration with therapists, physicians and dosimetrists. The Assistant Medical Physicist will also participate in the acceptance testing and commissioning of the proton therapy and medical imaging equipment. The Assistant Medical Physicist is primarily responsible, under the direct supervision of a Medical Physicist, for the patient specific and routine QA aspects of the treatment processes and the equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • At the direction of Medical Physics leadership, participates in the commissioning and acceptance testing of all proton therapy equipment according to all industry standards, all stand and local regulations governing said commissioning, and doing so to meet Proton Center deadline for completion.
  • Performs daily calibrations for all therapy equipment as assigned by Medical Physicist.
  • Proficiently utilizes radiation measuring equipment, treatment planning computers, and Record and Verify system.
  • Participates in Lean process, under direction of Medical Physicist, to ensure quality, efficient, and effective production of treatment related workflow throughout the patient treatment process.
  • Works with Billing team to improve processes and produce documentation required during account/appeal processes.

  • Maintains a current knowledge of proper physics coding and documentation, and assists in training new Physics staff members (physicists and physics support staff) on same.
  • Ensures a robust Physics component of Mosaiq and utilizes the quality checklist for intra- and interdepartmental communication.
  • Performs quality control tests of proton beams characteristics and mechanical characteristics of all proton therapy equipment under direct supervision of Medical Physicist.
  • Measures, analyzes, and enters data used for treatment planning computer software and tests new versions of software as directed by Medical Physicist.
  • Performs patient-specific radiation measurement and calculations.
  • Assists the Radiation Safety Officer in performing functions and reporting (annual, adverse incidents, etc.) required by hospital, local, and federal agencies.
  • Participates in at-center training of all new physics staff as requested.
  • Participates in research and development projects as assigned by Medical Physicist. Imaging Equipment Testing

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor or Master of Science in a science-related field
  • 5 years’ experience with radiology clinical and QA procedures

Preferred:

  • 3 years of Lab or scientific research experience
  • Excellent computer skills, including use of Mosaiq or Varis Record & Verify, Excel, Word and Outlook
