About the Library: The Office has two main libraries that the librarian is responsible for updating and maintaining.  The librarian also assists with managing the Office’s online subscriptions with Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, and Wolters Kluwer.  The librarian assists attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants across the Office in locating hard to find articles, gathering legislative histories, and other legal research projects.

Job Description

Librarian Responsibilities: The Librarian reports to the Office’s Manager of Legal Support and Administrative Services, and takes assignments from attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants across the Office.  The responsibilities listed below represent the range of duties that may be assigned and are not intended as an exhaustive list.

  • Provide reference services, manage the law library’s collection development, use the public library interlibrary loan program, and catalogue library materials.
  • Obtain and maintain passwords and access to Westlaw, Lexis, and Wolters Kluwer for users.
  • Work with Deputy City Attorneys to update and renew all contracts.
  • Evaluate and recommend new titles for acquisition, whether print titles or databases.
  • Evaluate usage/cost statistics for all online products and print continuations.
  • Forward daily legal news emails to different teams or individuals.
  • Update and maintain all hard copy books.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.L.S., M.L.I.S. or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited school and/or a J.D. from an ABA - accredited law school; OR
  • Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program, or other significant work experience that satisfies statutory requirements (i.e., Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 6450 compliant).

Desired Qualifications

  • One year of experience in a law firm setting.
  • Two years of responsible computer-related experience in a law library, experience providing legal reference and/or teaching/training experience and experience in web interface designs.
  • Knowledge of WESTLAW, LEXIS, Internet legal resources and/or other on-line databases and software applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Able to communicate effectively and tactfully with attorneys, office personnel, vendors, and representatives of other governmental departments/entities; and to accept and implement written and oral instructions. 
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with Office employees. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and prioritize and complete multiple assignments.
  • Adept in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.
  • Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Desire and ability to work successfully as part of a team.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt (PEX) – This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer

Salary and Benefits: The position has a five-step salary scale ranging from $86,112 - $104,624.  The successful candidate will be placed at a salary step based on years of experience and additional relevant degrees, certifications, credentials or skills.  The City offers robust health, retirement and other benefits.  For more information please visit: https://sfdhr.org/benefits-overview.  Legal Assistants are represented by the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers, Local 21, which has a Memorandum of Understanding with the City that can be found at MOU.
