Job Description

NCBA CLUSA’s USAID-funded Farmer-to-Farmer program sends American farmers and agribusiness professionals on 2-4 week agricultural development assignments, promoting sustainable growth and agricultural development worldwide.  Volunteer technical assistance from U.S. farmers, agribusinesses, cooperatives and universities helps smallholder farmers in developing countries improve productivity, access new markets and conserve environmental and natural resources.  During COVID-19 we have shifted to a hybrid volunteer model that affords US volunteers and in-country volunteers the opportunity to continue to provide technical assistance.   Compensation in the form of lodging, transportation, per diem, is provided by NCBA CLUSA.  No salary/consultant fees are paid. NCBA CLUSA is currently seeking qualified Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer candidates (either 1- US volunteer willing to travel) for the position of Carbon Footprint Lead to support  Café Orgánico Marcala Sociedad Anónima (COMSA)  based in Marcala, Honduras

Job Description: Café Organico Marcala Sociedad Anónima (COMSA Inc.) was established in December 2001 as an alternative to get better prices for small-scale coffee farmers in the department of La Paz. They have been working for 18 years on developing a sustainable business with their producers and clients. Their most recent carbon footprint study was conducted in 2017 resulting in recommendations to improve carbon emissions, mitigate climate change, decrease water usage, etc.  They would like a specialist to conduct an updated study to identify potential for improvement and how to obtain carbon neutral certification.

Duration: Any 3 week period between April and June 2022    

ESSENTIAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • In collaboration with the training participants, conduct a new carbon footprint study and present results to COMSA members. 
  • After the study is complete, update the green action plan which will detail improvement measures.
  • Instruct the participants on how to set smart indicators and a simple M&E plan
  • Train COMSA representatives on the steps to obtain a carbon neutral certification.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Sustainability, Climate Change, Environmental Engineering or other Earth Sciences
  • Interest in and familiarity with sustainability topics such as decarbonization, net zero, carbon neutrality, science-based targets, energy efficiency, clean energy, etc.
  • Experience designing smart indicators and developing M&E plans for carbon footprint studies
  • Demonstrated quantitative skills
  • Demonstrated LCA / CI modeling skills
  • Ability to write clear concise reports outlining model outputs and market concepts
  • Knowledge about the requirements and steps to obtain a neutral carbon certification.
  • Experience with coffee crops is desired but not required
  • Available for virtual communications with Host Organization, Staff and Co-volunteer
  • US candidate must be legally able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Advanced English language skills; reading, writing, speaking.
