Job Description

SFO is looking for motivated interns to join our Career Advance Internship Program. As an SFO Career Advance Intern, you will gain valuable work experience while building your skills and playing a vital role in the operation of SFO!

Career Advance interns work in one of the many offices at the airport. Each intern will work directly with an SFO Mentor who will guide and develop them through daily tasks and larger-scale projects. Interns will also be given the opportunity to attend tours of SFO, Meet and Greets with Airport leadership, and other workshops and events aimed at professional development.

SFO is offering internship opportunities in the following areas:

  • Security Access Office (SAO): As an intern in SAO, you will learn how the Airport manages security background checks; issues airport I.D. badges, security keys, and vehicle permits; and provides computer-based training to all airport badge holders. You will gain on-the-job training in customer service, while processing documents, entering data, performing audits, and working on special projects.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): As an intern in DEI, you will learn about the Airport’s Racial Equity Action Plan and Drives a culture of inclusion and belonging so that employees feel respected, valued, and engaged to bring their personal best and contribute fully to the airport. You will gain on-the-job training in customer service, while supporting office administrative functions, coordinating events, and working on special projects.
  • Environmental Operations & Sustainability: You will have an opportunity to learn about SFO’s robust sustainability program and complex environmental operations. The Environmental Operations and Sustainability teams ensure SFO meets its high operational standards for recycled water use, domestic water and wastewater compliance, spill management, emerging contaminates, pest management and material diversion. You will gain on-the-job experience in facilitating, developing, implementing, and integrating environmental practices across all operations and among multiple stakeholders. You will provide “boots-on-the-ground” service and support for a range of environmental programs at the Airport that help the Airport reach its sustainability goals, including the Bay Pollution Prevention Program, the Green Business Program, and Zero Waste initiatives. You will gain experience in conducting outreach and training for staff related to zero waste and pollution prevention and will participate in the annual Zero Waste Characterization.
  • Signage/Wayfinding: As an intern, you will play an active role in SFO’s Signage & Wayfinding team and will have the opportunity for meaningful input in signage decisions, assessing needs, and developing graphics and signage installation plans as needed.

Internship Details

  • Schedule:  24-32 hours per week, Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Note: the internship is in-person but may offer some telecommuting flexibility.
  • Duration: August 2022 through August 2023
  • Salary: $22.7625 hourly
  • Transportation: BART tickets/transit tokens are provided.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED (General Education Development) obtained before the start of the internship program (August 2022)

Selection Procedures:

Qualified candidates will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire that must be completed and submitted for further consideration in the internship program.

The selection process will include evaluating applications with minimum requirements.  Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.  Depending on the number of applicants, the Airport may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates.  If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Airport will be invited for an interview.

Notes:  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through all of the steps in the selection procedure.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
