Job Description

We are seeking an expert in digital content and social media communications!  Do you have excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience, technical knowledge, and understanding of managing website and social media content; creative skills to produce digital content like photos, videos, and graphics; comfortable with content management systems and HTML; experience with metrics, analytics, and tracking; project management and organization skills; a team-collaborator who can learn quickly and work in a fast-paced environment; and be able to handle the pressure of meeting tight deadlines? What you will do…..

SFO’s Content Manager will be instrumental in maintaining online marketing and communications strategies and content on our websites and through social media which includes creating content including, but not limited to copywriting, images, videos, graphics, and animations; ensuring compliance with San Francisco’s Language Access Ordinance, ADA requirements, and data protection standards; conducting interviews and preparing articles for publication; and narrating, scheduling, producing content, posting, monitoring, responding, and reporting on the Airport’s websites and social media channels.

Under general direction, this class is responsible for the planning, implementation and coordination of the San Francisco International Airport’s Communication Program.  The Communication Program includes creating, updating, editing, and publishing content and messaging for all channels (i.e. print, digital, web, mobile, broadcast, etc.) and audiences (i.e. internal and external), creating broad public awareness, and understanding and effectively communicating the Airport’s policies and programs. Position will manage projects assigned by the Director of Marketing and Communications; and will provide oversight and direction to professional, technical and/or clerical staff members assigned to project teams.

The essential functions of this position include but not limited to the following:

1.     Manages content for all Airport Marketing and Communications channels including but not limited to websites, mobile applications, digital signage/screens, print, streaming and broadcast services, and social media.

2.     Creates and develops informative, user-friendly, customer-focused, and visually compelling content (e.g., copy, photos, videos, gifs, graphics) across all distribution channels (e.g. websites, mobile-applications, broadcast, social) for internal and external communications.

3.     Updates content on all channels.  Makes recommendations to stakeholders about ways to improve content and develops new content.  Continuously audits content to ensure that content (including hyperlinks) is accurate, current, relevant, displayed in the best manner, and optimized for search. 

4.     Creates geo-targeted campaigns to promote the airport. Recommends new content for non-English sites and channels. Ensures compliance with the Language Access Ordinance and other regulatory requirements. Oversees and facilitates the translation process and content creation from concept to publication on designated websites and channels.

5.     Researches and analyzes airport and airline industry practices and procedures, pertinent legislation, and issues dealing with the community and passenger service; and makes recommendations for improving content and messaging.

6.     Maintains and monitors consistency of the Airport’s creative direction and content. Works with technical support staff to ensure functionality of websites, social media, and other channels. Makes recommendations relating to trends and improvements. Assists in policy development and long-range planning, and development and implementation of projects for the Airport’s websites, social media, and other channels. 

7.     Serves as liaison between Airport staff, Airport tenants, and community groups, providing accurate public, corporate, and community information; manages crises communications; represents the Director of Marketing and Communications in their absence at various community, organizational, governmental meetings; and manages daily office operation as required.

8.     Contributes to the development and implementation of project strategy and work plans. Assist with managing marketing, communications and promotional activities including, but not limited to message and ad copy, social media messaging, airline and tenant promotions, customer service messaging, and Airport services campaigns. Monitors Airport information on projects and special events ensuring positive community relations. Works with other Airport sections to coordinate informational activities.

9.     Manages the master content calendar for all channels. Creates, proofs, and edits content including: writing stories, articles, press releases, blogs, and social media posts; taking, editing and producing photos and videos; and monitoring and responding on social media channels.

10.  Responds to complaints or requests for information. Ensures that all content is in compliance with international, federal, state, and local laws and regulations including copy right laws, model release forms, waivers, email regulations, cyber security, and data storage laws.

11.  Conducts periodic channel audits to ensure content is accurate, up to date and relevant. Identifies and recommends improvements to the user experience and user interface. Coordinates with Customer Service to support a positive customer experience. Conducts competitive research and analysis and formulates recommendations. Reviews analytics to understand customer needs, identify trends and areas of concern, and potential design and content improvements.

Qualifications

Education:

Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Journalism, Communications, Public Administration, Business, or a related field. AND

Experience:

1. Four (4) years of experience in Communications, Public/Government Affairs, and/or Community/Corporate Relations or a related field which involved primary duties in editing, creating and planning communications content (i.e. articles, newsletters, press releases, rich media), public speaking, media contact, and/or community contact/liaison AND

2. One (1) year of experience managing the content of a Public/Government or Community/Corporate website using a content management system. 

Substitution:

Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.  Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one (1) year.

Desirable Qualifications

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred to hiring.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience using Drupal as a content management system.
  • Experience using a digital asset management system like Widen.
  • Experience with digital indoor mapping and way finding solutions like Jibestream.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Experience working with creative and web development agencies.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedures

Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Weight:100%): Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire designed to measure the knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas required for the position which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of current web-based and digital technologies – refers to the knowledge of content management systems, web hosting environments, and internet infrastructure and processes; understanding of website work flow; ability to capture, manipulate, and publish a variety of media types (i.e., text, image, video); familiarity with third party creative software programs; organizational ability – refers to the ability to set priorities, coordinate or schedule tasks, events, business requirements and data in a logical manner so as to maximize staff and material resources, maximize reach and readership of content, increase efficiency, and anticipate the needs of the organization; customer serviceability – refers to the ability to liaison with internal and external customers including airport managers, tenants, airline, community and civic groups in order to keep them informed on Airport issues and projects; and provide fast and efficient service and work; oral communication ability – refers to the ability to verbally persuade, summarize, and justify effectively; elicit feedback and draw others in the conversation; communication clearly and effectively with all levels of staff, other City departments, outside website contractors and the general public; written communication ability – refers to the ability to write grammatically correct compelling stories, articles, press releases and other content that clearly captures the subject matter and incorporates the Airport’s overall communications messages; read, comprehend and interpret complex written materials; project management ability – refers to the ability to oversee, monitor, and manage projects, including planning and designing of projects relative to websites, and other digital solutions in an efficient and inclusive manner that meets the established timelines, targets, objectives, and budget; computer skills – refers to an intermediate understanding of content production software (e.g., ADA checkers, Adobe Creative Cloud) and network operating systems related to web production and publishing; problem solving ability – refers to the ability to identify problems and find solutions; anticipate future challenges and proactively address them; recognize when additional information or resources are necessary; research and obtain necessary information through a variety of methods such as: probing for clarity, reading materials, and collaborating with other departments, customers, and outside vendors while exhibiting independent thinking; and interpersonal relations skill –refers to the ability to discover mutually agreeable solutions among all stakeholders to facilitate productive interaction and honest communication with stakeholders including internal and external customers.  A passing score on the Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation must be achieved in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance: Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of six months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
