About The Role

We are seeking a Chief News Reporter to join our dynamic news team. This is a senior role and the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the newsroom’s content creation strategy.

The successful candidate will support the news team across all our stations and the Network News service of Independent Local Radio Stations and will report to the Group Director of News.

What you’ll do

  • Contribute and execute creative, original story/feature ideas to drive key audience engagement
  • Develop ‘exclusive’ news stories for broadcast and publication online
  • Have effective verbal and writing skills, be adept at making editorial judgements and an ability to confidently deliver breaking news live on air
  • When live on air, you will communicate with command, comfort and clarity, even - or especially - when a story is developing so rapidly that a traditional or formal script is useless.
  • Be expected to work under pressure and maintain a professional image to the public at all times
  • Mentor members of the reporting team and provide leadership when necessary
  • Understand the value of social media, be active in that space and use your own social media accounts to publicise your own work and the work of your colleagues.
  • Be expected to have effective interpersonal skills and a contacts book full of good/reliable information sources.
  • Understand the impact of an individual story and ensure that all content created is engaging, legally sound, accurate and innovative.
  • Working to the daily news schedule when required, chase breaking and emerging stories and attending  markings at the direction of the Group Director of News

Qualifications

  • You have excellent knowledge of defamation law and BAI Codes of Conduct
  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure and to deadlines
  • You can spot and develop stories that get people talking

  • Have 3+ years’ experience in the field
  • Hold a full clean drivers licence
  • Have a third level degree in a relevant discipline
  • Willing to work unsociable hours including weekends and public holidays
