Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

The Space Institute is looking for an Assembly Integration and Test Engineer to participate in the production and test of small space missions being undertaken at the university, or for external customers wishing to utilise the university facilities. The successful applicant will have experience in mechanical and electrical integration of critical high reliability systems, ideally in the space sector. They will be able to perform mechanical integration of space structures, and also capable of electrical integration including soldering of electrical harnesses and printed circuit assemblies. They will enjoy being part of a small team, working in a leading edge industry in an often dynamic and challenging environment.

The main purpose of the position is to perform and manage spacecraft system, or subsystem, assembly, integration and test. The successful candidate will facilitate the use and management of complex equipment in the Te Pūnaha Ātea Space Institute laboratories/facilities including the National Satellite Test Facility (NSTF) and Fabrication and Assembly Facility (FAF), and will assist, or lead the assembly, integration and test of the institutes small satellite program.

The salary range for this role is $89,400 - $110,400 per annum depending on experience and qualifications.

Qualifications

He kōrero mōu | About you

Candidates will be expected to lead the Assembly and Integration of small spacecraft, including soldering of printed circuit assemblies, electrical harnesses and mechanical assembly. They will manage test campaigns, including vibration and thermal vacuum tests, on complex space hardware, both for missions developed internally by the Space Institute, and also for external customers using the National Space Test Facility. They will have good planning and communication skills to interact with internal and external customers to ensure tests are planned and conducted in a safe and efficient manner. They will have good technical skills such that they can integrate complex systems and operate complex test equipment to maintain the safety of both staff and equipment.

 

Along with this they will have:

  • At least three years’ experience (post training) as a technician building and testing complex equipment, ideally in the aerospace industry
  • Relevant experience with relevant measurement techniques, testing, calibration processes and ideally accreditation.
  • Experience in explaining and resolving difficult technical issues
  • Experience in implementing rigorous safety practices
  • Working knowledge of complex systems and interfaces, ideally associated with aerospace industry
  • Practical skills with mechanical and electrical tools
  • Electronic assembly skills including soldering and harnessing
  • Computer literacy and IT skills with strong skills in Excel or other spreadsheet applications
  • Ability to work proactively, autonomously and in a team
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence in dealing and talking with staff and students in a respectful manner
  • Ability to understand and interpret relevant policies and procedures into role requirements
  • Ability to identify, assess and lead problem solving processes
