Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Kei aku nui, Kei aku rahi, ki ngā hunga pāpāho, anei he pānui i te tūranga kei waenganui i a tātou. 

We are looking for an experienced journalist to join the media team in the Communications Office as our Kaitohutohu Ao Pāpāho Māori - Māori Media Adviser.  

Your job will be to work closely with Māori staff and students to ensure we are better capturing and sharing academic, professional, and life achievements throughout Aotearoa. 

Our media team works across the University and its faculties to identify and share stories through traditional and new media channels, and to enhance its reputation.

Our Māori media adviser role is focussed on Māori staff and students to share their stories. Equally important is to reach hapori whānui through appropriate and tailored channels with the work the University (research, teaching and learning) is carrying out that resonates and is of interest to Māori.

He kōrero mōu | About you

As well as professional media/writing/journalism skills, you will need to be a fluent te reo communicator. You will need to work across a range of disciplines and faculties (with the support of your colleagues), to meet deadlines and prioritise your work.  

A member of the Communications Office, you will also work closely with the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori to support them with communications – including social media.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A degree in communications, journalism, public relations, media studies or related discipline is preferred.
• A high level of oral and written communication in te reo Māori and English
• Proven experience in media relations with Māori
• Sound knowledge of media operations with contacts and networks already in place, experience in liaising with and pitching to the media, and an ability to obtain coverage
•  A great eye for a good story
