Agency Description

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) works to mitigate, plan, and prepare for emergencies; educate the public about preparedness; coordinate emergency response and recovery efforts; and develop tools and identify resources to support the overall preparedness of the City of Philadelphia.

Job Description

The Emergency Management Tier II Intern will assist in the collection and management of fees from companies throughout the city who are required under federal law to submit reports on chemical storage. This includes preparing and sending invoices, collecting, and depositing payments, and tracking companies who are delinquent in their reporting requirements. Additionally, the intern will attend the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meetings and assist the Health and Medical Planning Coordinator accordingly.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in emergency management or upper-level interagency coordination.  Beyond the Tier II reporting, opportunities may include participation in any Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activations, as well as participation in drills and exercises.

Salary – Up to a $5,000 USD stipend ($15.00 per hour)

Note: This is a temporary position that is grant funded. Candidates must be able to work between 10-20 hours a week for the approximate period of February 2022 to June 2022. Flexible scheduling may be available on a case-by-case basis.

 

Essential Functions

Under the direction of the Health and Medical Planning Coordinator, the Tier II Intern is responsible for supporting a range of preparedness activities including, but not limited to the following:

  • Gaining subject matter expertise in environmental safety, hazardous materials, and Tier II reporting.
  • Developing and maintaining information on hazardous materials emergency preparedness and response in Philadelphia.
  • Writing, maintaining, and updating assigned elements of plans and policy documents related to emergency management’s hazardous material program.
  • Developing and maintaining partnerships with a variety of stakeholders from local, state and federal government as well as community-based organizations, non-profit organizations and private entities.
  • Performing other work as required.

 

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong interest in emergency management, public health, homeland security, and/or contingency planning
  • Ability to function professionally in rapidly changing and stressful environments
  • Strong writing and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and develop partnerships
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Ability to learn new online software

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of this position.

Salary:  $15/hour
