The Tutor interacts day-to-day with middle or high school students engaged in the Prince George’s County Public Schools/Close Up Foundation virtual, afterschool Civic Voices Academy (HS) and Civic Leaders Program (MS). The Tutor supports a specific small group of students’ learning and progress through the program. 

Over the course of the Civic Voices Academy program, students will investigate and discuss America’s democratic values and aspirations, deliberate about pressing community and national issues, and consider how to effect change. The curriculum is intended to build citizenship and media literacy skills, develop students’ civic and democratic dispositions, and support students’ growth in critical thinking and problem solving. Throughout the program tutors will work with small groups of students to increase writing, public speaking, and other citizenship skills.

Responsibilities

  • Be the part of the facilitation team for middle or high school students participating in the program 
  • Be directly responsible for a small group of students within each cohort
  • Guide and assist assigned students through various writing exercises throughout the program
  • Lead students through thoughtful discussions
  • Assist with administrative support of the program, such as creating Zoom breakout rooms
  • Empower students through delivery of the program curriculum, utilizing Close Up methodology
  • Establish and maintain reasonable behavior expectations for participant engagement to ensure a positive learning environment for all
  • Take attendance each session
  • Maintain respectful relationships with colleagues, students, and program coordinators/administrators

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Proficient and comfortable using various technologies including Zoom
  • Ability and willingness to use own computer or laptop for work, along with stable internet connection in a professional enviroment 
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination as required by company policy (due to occasional in-person interactions)
  • Willingness to submit to a post-offer fingerprint scan and criminal background check according to federal regulations

Other Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or completion of some college level coursework preferred
  • Experience teaching social studies or humanities and/or subject area content knowledge preferred
  • Experience working with students in a school, summer camp, or childcare setting preferred
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Punctual, takes pride in being reliable and dependable

Compensation and Benefits | In addition to meaningful and rewarding work, Close Up Foundation offers a competitive rate of $35/hour, participation in its 403(b) retirement savings program, and a positive work environment.

Program Duration |14-week program sessions will be held from October 8 - December 8. Each Middle School session will meet twice a week. Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs. There will be two sessions each night for students to chose from 530 or 645. High School sessions run Mon/Tues/Thurs. There will be two sessions each night for students to chose from 530 or 645

Programming will be conducted between 5:00pm and 8:00pm EST.

Currently, all program components will be conducted virtually. There will be required program and content training conducted for all staff throughout the sessions, the first being held virtually in October during evening program hours (5-8)

Schedule Shift Options 

1.       Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:00-8:00pm (Middle School only)

2.       Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00-8:00pm (Middle School only)

3.       Monday-Thursday, 5:00-9:00pm (Middle School only)

4.       Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 5:00-8:00 (High School only)
