Job Description

Electronic Firmware Engineer..

The Engineer will be a part of the CTO organization. The successful candidate will utilize knowledge and technical skills in electronic engineering, firmware/software engineering to work on the design, development, execution, and implementation of areal density enabling concepts in data storage devices. The Engineer will write Firmware to support new hardware (HW) for fundamental functions and integrate new features.

Ability to perform self-guided data analysis and contribute to a small team is integral to the project’s success.

Responsibilities:

  • Software skills required to help write performance and process firmware/software and/or develop/update test scripts to control HW. 
  • Perform failure analysis.
  • Develop tool to collect data and evaluate results.
  • Algorithm development to help identifying recording performance issues/root causes with regard to the data channel function
  • Develop more effective bench level testing tools to enhance FA capability
  • Work with other internal teams to develop features for products.
  • Work with supplier/vendor on hardware functional evaluation/validation/improvement.

 

Qualifications

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in EE or related.
  • Basic understanding on magnetic recording & signal processing, various signal-to-noise.
  • Solid statistical analysis skills.
  • Strong communication skills and good team player.
  • Strong lab skills, use oscilloscope, logic-analyzer.
  • Strong programming skills (C/C++, TCL, Python, etc.) preferred.
  • Travel may be required internationally or in the US.

  • An employee’s pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
  • The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Colorado or remote jobs that can be performed in Colorado.  This range may be modified in the future.
  • You will also be eligible to participate in Western Digital's Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan and to receive equity awards under our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs), pursuant to the terms of these programs.  RSU awards are also available to eligible new hires, subject to Western Digital’s Standard Terms and Conditions for Restricted Stock Unit Awards.
