Apprentice Electronic Instrumentation Technician Program (EIT)

The Apprentice EIT Program is a paid 4-6 year apprenticeship leading to the journey level 7336 Electronic Instrumentation Technician, Water Pollution Control.  Apprentices will perform on the job training of the work typical of the 7336 Electronic Instrumentation Technician.  In addition, Apprentices will attend college classes at City College of San Francisco for the classroom portion of this Program. 

Apprentices must satisfactorily perform all work tasks and training requirements which includes passing all required classes to progress and ultimately graduate the Program and become a journey level EIT.

Starting pay for this Program is $65,572 per year along with City medical, dental, retirement and other benefits.  Apprentices receive pay increases every 6 months as long as you make satisfactory progress in your training and educational classes.  Failure to meet satisfactory progress in the Program will result in dismissal from the Program.

About Wastewater Enterprise (WWE)

The Wastewater Enterprise (WWE) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of San Francisco’s combined sewer system that collects, treats, and discharges once treated, sanitary sewage (toilet flushing, bathroom & kitchen sinks, showers) and stormwater runoff (rainwater) falling on our roofs, sidewalks and streets within San Francisco, parts of Daly City, the Bayshore Sanitary District, Brisbane, Treasure Island, and Yerba Buena Island. This work is crucial for the protection of public health, and for the environmental safety of the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean.

The WWE Maintenance Division ensures safe and reliable service by performing preventative and corrective maintenance at multiple facilities across the City. This includes 3 treatment facilities, 27 pump stations, 36 discharge points, and massive underground transport/storage structures around the City that have storage capacity up to 200 million gallons.

Job Description

Under immediate supervision, assists the electronic instrumentation technician in the operation and maintenance of a wide variety of complex machinery and equipment in a water pollution control sewage treatment plant or pumping station; and performs related duties as required.

  1. Assists with the operation of testing apparatus such as Diagnostic Test Equipment (DTE), using established testing procedures to produce, regulate and record effects of actual or simulated conditions; prepares reports interpreting test data to usable terms; may direct other technical personnel assisting in test procedures.
  2. Supports with diagnostic, corrective and preventive maintenance on complex electronic systems and instruments, including analog pneumatic and digital electronic equipment; install, test, troubleshoot and repair programmable logic controller interfaces located at a wastewater treatment facility.
  3. Aids with maintenance records of work performed; develops documentation for the maintenance, installation, removal and modification of electronic systems and equipment.
  4. Supports the installation and inspections of new equipment, evaluation of performance under operating conditions; assists in the design, fabrication or modification of fixtures, instruments and related apparatus; and verifies and evaluates dimensional and functional acceptability and performance of such devices.
  5. Assists with the operation of special power or hand tools and measuring equipment including soldering equipment, oscilloscopes, multi-meters, analyzers, calibrators, hand generators, power suppliers and other instruments used in operating, testing, calibrating or repairing electromechanical and electrohydraulic apparatus.

1.       Applicants must have either a High School Graduation Diploma, Graduation Equivalent Degree (G.E.D.), or California High School Proficiency Certificate; AND

2.       Possession of a current valid California Driver's License

October 6, 7, 8, 2021, Exam:  Qualified candidates will be invited to take an assessment on one of these dates to assess your ability in Algebra 1 level math which Apprentices will need for the classroom portion of this Program.  

October 14 - 22, 2021, Final Interviews:  Selected Finalists will be invited to interview during this week.  Those selected for the Program will be notified shortly after interviews are completed to begin pre-employment background checks and application for enrollment for City College SF to start classes in the Spring, 2022 semester that starts in January.

November 1, 2021, Deadline to apply for enrollment at City College of SF:  Application for enrollment is required to register for classes that will start in January 2022.
