Job Description

Librarian II – Adult & Information Services

Advanced professional library position in Adult and Information Services. Serves as the Library’s in-charge staff member during the absence of a supervisor. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian III.  Work is performed within the established Departmental and City policies, procedures, and guidelines but with wide latitude in the use of independent judgment and decision making.  

The Librarian II performs a variety of related functions as may be determined from the following:

  • In a courteous manner, answers reference and reader advisory questions in person, by telephone, and electronically by identifying and retrieving correct information and appropriate sources.
  • Utilizes the Library’s print and digital resources to retrieve information for patrons and escorts patrons to areas of the Library to assist in retrieval of requested materials.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computers, e-Readers, tablets and smart phones to instruct patrons on downloadable library services.
  • Instructs patrons in the use of the Library’s print and digital resources and provides technology assistance.
  • Develops and presents programs and activities (in-house and outreach) for library users in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Develops material displays, signs, posters and flyers.
  • May assist with maintenance of the Library’s social media sites at the direction of supervisor.
  • Oversees Interlibrary Loan Service by completing loan requests, incoming and outgoing; retrieves items; completes record-keeping, maintaining statistics, etc.
  • As directed by Supervisor, may perform collection development and management functions by reading journals, recommended selection lists, etc.; catalogs, and other reference materials; evaluates books and other information sources for purchase, and provides ordering information to the section supervisor or designee.  Periodically evaluates Library collection in area(s) of responsibility for timeliness, breadth, depth, physical condition, frequency of use, and public demand. 
  • In the absence of Library Supervisory staff, may be designated as “person in charge.”
  • May perform original and copy cataloging of library material formats.  This includes, but is not limited to, searching multiple bibliographic databases, selecting accurate bibliographic records using MARC matching criteria, creating holdings and item records and reviewing bibliographic records for accuracy.
  • Performs other job-related duties that are consistent with assigned Division responsibilities.

The starting pay is $22.4326 - $23.5542. The pay range is $22.4326 - $33.6489 per hour.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Graduation from an accredited American Library Association (ALA) college or university with a Master's Degree in Library Science. At least one year’s experience in a multiple service library preferred.   Considerable knowledge of the practices, principles, and methods of Library Science and Administration.  Ability to analyze facts and exercise judgment and decision making. Proficient in the use of basic technology. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a clear and courteous manner to the public and other staff members. Ability to work varying daily work schedules.
