KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of free, public charter schools that prepares students for success in college and life. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx.  Our goal was to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in high school, college and beyond – and in so doing, to prove what is possible for all students.  Today, our New York City network is comprised of eight elementary schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Through College and Career, a comprehensive support program for our alumni. KIPP NYC Public Schools currently serves more than 8,000 students and alumni and has a staff of more than 700. KIPP NYC is continuing to grow and will be opening two new middle schools and an elementary school in August 2021!

Job Description

The Assistant Controller is an essential role on the KIPP NYC Finance Team that will assist in leading a high performing Accounting team. The Assistant Controller is the ideal position for a detailed-oriented accounting professional with superb organizational skills and a high bar for delivering excellent customer service.  The Assistant Controller will report directly to the Controller and will be primarily responsible for managing our accounts payable systems and processes. This is role is based out of our NYC office in midtown Manhattan.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Team Management

  • Manage team of 5 accounting staff with regular feedback, professional development, and training to drive team and individual performance goals
  • Create a positive work environment with high employee engagement
  • Provide advice and mentoring to staff regarding GAAP, complying with federal or donor grant regulations, responding to accounting and payroll inquiries and other general accounting matters.
  • Review journal entries made by accounting staff for accuracy and alignment with KIPP NYC budgets
  • Model exemplary customer service to KIPP NYC staff by responding to inquiries in a timely and effective manner
  • Oversee weekly transactions to ensure timely execution and prepare bank wires for authorization and execution.

Grant Management

  • Oversee the accounting and reporting of all federal, state, local and private grants
  • Advanced knowledge of A-133 audits, A-122, and applicable compliance and regulatory guidance related to government awards

Internal Controls and Fiscal Policies & Procedures

  • Develop, implement and maintain strong accounting process and control systems ensuring compliance with GAAP for educational institutions, the Internal Revenue Code, FASB, Treasury Regulations, and other applicable state and federal laws
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations and schedules for review by the Controller and the CFO. These include, but are not limited to intercompany reconciliations, accruals, payroll liabilities
  • Assist with annual audit schedules
  • Complete ad hoc projects as needed

Qualifications

  • BA/BS or MS in Accounting or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software. Proficiency in Sage Intacct accounting software preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years relevant accounting experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a non-profit accounting function,
  • Minimum 3 years of team management experience, especially with managing a diverse team
  • Knowledge of current accounting best practices, including fund accounting,  as well as experience with accounting process improvement in Procure to Pay, Closing the Books,  as well as around leveraging emerging technology
