Nazarbayev University’s Center for Preparatory Studies (CPS) is currently seeking qualified English for Academic Purposes teachers to begin in August 2021. (See https://careers.smartrecruiters.com/NazarbayevUniversity1/academic-jobs for other available positions.)

CPS has two academic programs: a Foundation Year Program (NUFYP) and a pre-masters preparatory program.  NUFYP emphasizes academic English (EAP), mathematics, and study skills to prepare students for Nazarbayev University’s undergraduate schools. The minimum English entry level into NUFYP is an overall IELTS of 6.0.  CPS also operates a one-year pre-master’s curriculum that enhances degree-holding students’ English skills and prepares them for study for a master’s degree at NU.

Job Description

Teaching Fellows teach up to 18 student-contact hours per week (e.g., lectures, seminars, office hours); additional duties may include: material/assessment development, invigilation, or supporting the Academic Learning Center (up to four hours per week).  Faculty also choose their community service work, e.g., serving on a committee, developing professional workshops, providing student support or pursuing community-wide professional activities.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have the qualifications, experience, character, and skills required to effectively teach and work in an EAP curriculum in Kazakhstan.  Technology enhanced learning or assessment experience is a plus. Essential qualifications include:

  • Completed Master’s degree in appropriate subject area
  • Excellent individual teaching competencies and the willingness to teach a unified curriculum
  • A strong work ethic; mature professional behavior; and exemplary personal character
  • Competence to work in a multicultural, educational environment; willingness to collaborate as a supportive team member; and ability to live and work in Kazakhstan
  • Excellent overall communications skills with the ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Compelling desire to contribute to Kazakhstani youth and to NU’s development
