Job Description

The MR-Linac, MRL Physicist (Physics V) reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine  adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards as well  as MRL unit.

The MRL Physicist is responsible for all aspects related to the physics of MRL in the department of Radiation Oncology (hereafter referred to as "departments") and supports the clinical needs of the department.

Responsibilities:

  • Involve in site preparation, commissioning and acceptance testing of the new MRL (ViewRay system)
  • Maintains primary responsibility for ViewRay MRL operations, including workflow through the department.
  • Identifies and resolves daily operational issues related to the MRL aspects of patient care.
  • Interacts with all sections of the department, including physicians, nursing, physicists and therapists to ensure smooth patient treatment delivery with this new technology.
  • Provides daily direction and supervision of various staff, including Physicists, Dosimetrists, LAN Administrator, and Instrument Designer.
  • Assists Director of Medical Physics in administrative responsibilities related to the MRL, including development of capital and operating budgets, monitoring of inventory and ordering of supplies.
  • Ensures that the quality assurance and monitoring plans achieve the goal of ensuring the highest quality of patient care and patient safety.
  • Maintains knowledge of current industry standards set by professional organizations, including the American College of Radiology and the American Association for Physicists in Medicine, and other sub-specialty organizations as indicated especially in MRI and MRL.
  • Develops and maintains all required and appropriate documentation for daily, monthly and annual calibration.
  • Actively participates in the education/research program of hospital and department.
  • Demonstrates proficiency and competence in providing and directing patient care for all age groups, including pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Ensures that appropriate quality measures and training are in place for the safe and accurate treatment using MRL.
  • Acts as a champion of MRL with liaison with radiology MR imaging group in developing adoptive therapy and innovative treatments.
  • Assists with and is able to perform broader role in oncology physics duties for 3DCRT, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT and other treatment modalities offered in the department.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Board Certified in Therapeutic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.
  • PhD or equivalent in Physics or Engineering.
  • Registered with Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety as an approved Therapeutic Radiological Physicist.
  • Demonstrated excellence as a Radiation Physicist in Radiation Oncology.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Active record in independent clinical research with publication in peer reviewed journals.

Preferred:

  • Board Certified in Therapeutic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.
  • Registered with Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety as an approved Therapeutic Radiological Physicist.
  • Demonstrated excellence as a Radiation Physicist in Radiation Oncology.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Active record in independent clinical research with publication in peer reviewed journals.
