Job Description

New Zealand’s leading scholarly publisher is looking for a te reo champion to join its small and collaborative city-based team on a 12 month fixed-term basis to help launch Kotahi Rau Pukapuka:100 Books in Te Reo Māori.

The role provides an outstanding opportunity for a talented individual with a passion for te reo Māori and the world of books to make a substantial contribution to the cultural landscape of Aotearoa.

You will work closely with the Kotahi Rau Pukapuka Trust; the Press team; te reo authors, translators and editors; funders; and key stakeholders in the Māori language world, including iwi and educational institutions.

Reporting to the director of Auckland University Press and supporting the chair of the Kotahi Rau Pukapuka Trust, your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Coordinate the activities of the Kotahi Rau Pukapuka Trust, including arranging meetings and hui, maintaining records, and working on funding applications and reports.
  • Assist the production manager with Kotahi Rau Pukapuka titles on the AUP list, published in te reo Māori, including manuscript preparation, proof collation and other checks.
  • Assist the marketing and sales manager with Kotahi Rau Pukapuka, including copywriting in te reo Māori for the Kotahi Rau Pukapuka website, Facebook and e-news; building up customer and stakeholder lists; and organising and administering launches and stands at key events.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this position

  • You will need to be a highly proficient communicator in written and oral te reo Māori.
  • You will have an undergraduate degree and ideally either qualifications or experience in editorial, copywriting and/or marketing.
  • You will have well-honed organisational and communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently while playing a full part in the creative teamwork involved in launching a bold new initiative.
  • You will be a highly competent user of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel. Skills in Photoshop and InDesign would be a plus.
