Job Description

The opportunity

The University Health & Counselling Service (UHCS) delivers a range of primary care services to help students prevent and overcome personal difficulties relating to their physical and mental wellbeing, and in so doing help them to achieve their full potential at the University.  

We are looking for a General Practitioner to provide competent, patient-centered primary care within UHCS to ensure the delivery of high quality health services to students that addresses health needs, promotes wellness, is based on latest evidence and guidelines, and meets legislative requirements.

You will report to the Medical Lead, and work closely with the Counselling and Nursing teams to ensure a cohesive approach to the delivery of holistic and integrated University Health and Counselling Service.

This is a full-time position (37.5 hours/week), involving varying shifts throughout our opening hours. This includes a shift from 12-8pm and occasional Saturday shifts during University examinations periods.

Our ideal candidate

  • A registered doctor within New Zealand and hold a current NZMC Practicing Certificate
  • Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of GPs or equivalent or working towards this.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary health setting with proven clinical experience with young adults and diverse communities.
  • Experience with health screening and healthy lifestyle interventions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks within the University and with referral agencies, in a way that best supports the needs of students.
  • Ability to analyse and respond to patient issues in a way that enables the service to develop new strategies and resources to appropriately address changing needs.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to provide medical advice to a range of students with the ability to respond appropriately and calmly in crisis situations, and to perform under pressure.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with members of the University, community agencies and a diverse client group, in a way that inspires trust, confidence and co-operation.
