Job Description

Alcoa West Plant in Massena, New York is a fully integrated aluminum production facility consisting of two business units: Smelting and Casting. The smelter comprises one of the largest and most automated smelting potlines in the industry. The cast house produces and sells metal as either billet, sow, molten, or rod to both internal and external customers.

This position will be assigned to the Smelter which consists of a potline of 198 operating pots producing 287 million pounds annually, pot repair operations, and a carbon plant with green, baked, and anode assembly operations. The hourly employees are represented by the United Steel Workers of America union.

The Electrical Engineer position is accountable to perform needed work under the supervision and direction of more experienced engineers and/or supervisors and to learn about processes, procedures, technologies, safety, economics, statistics, and other areas. Primary emphasis is on implementation in areas defined by others.

MAJOR DELIVERABLE OBJECTIVES:

  • Perform needed work in a timely and safe manner. Develop time management and prioritization techniques.
  • Gain knowledge and experience in plant processes and engineering procedures.
  • Demonstrate initiative and interest in assigned area.
  • Handle projects with support of experienced engineers or supervisors; may handle small projects independently.
  • Establish good working relationship with peers, associates, and others at all levels.
  • Develop an awareness of the safety and ergonomic impact engineering decisions have on people and equipment.
  • Develop an awareness of the environmental impact engineering decisions have within assigned areas.
  • Develop an awareness of the economic impact engineering decisions have on the facility.
  • Begin understanding and using statistical tools.
  • Begin developing technical skills in discipline.

KEY BUSINESS CHALLENGES:

  • Be a resource and problem solver to ensure and improve equipment reliability.
  • Provide quality services in a safe manner to the Maintenance and Engineering organization.
  • Provide direction and support to the Maintenance work group to improve their overall effectiveness.
  • Learn about the processes, procedures, technologies, safety, and business.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position reports to the Maintenance Manager. Principle contacts for this position include Superintendents, Process Flow and Group Leaders, Safety Manager, Alcoa Engineers, Contract Engineering Personnel, Bargaining Unit Personnel, Joint Safety Health Committee, Safety Advisers, Medical Department and Safety Department Personnel.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Sponsorship and relocation are not available for this position.

Preferred Qualification: Engineering work experience in a manufacturing environment.  Knowledge of engineering fundamentals in electrical control, instrumentation, PLC and automation systems. Good computer skills (Excel, Word, Power Point), be self-starting, dependable, and be proficient at written and oral communication.
