Assistant Dean of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement

Job Description

Summary:

The overall mission is to develop, implement, and evaluate a student affairs program focused on diversity, inclusion and community engagement for the purpose of student learning and development. This full-time, 12-month position serves on the senior leadership team within the Division of Student Life and reports to the Dean of Students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative Duties

  • Serve as a senior member of the leadership team for the Dean of Students staff within the Division of Student Life
  • Supervise two assistant directors and one graduate intern
  • Provide leadership to the department of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement including overseeing the budget, developing a strategic plan, and managing the day to day activities of a comprehensive diversity program and community engagement opportunities

Diversity and Inclusion Duties

  • Serve as the primary resource to and advocate for students from diverse backgrounds 
  • Advise several key multicultural student organizations
  • With the help of the staff oversee the LEAD (Lead, Education, Act, and Diversify) Program responsible for assisting first generation students successful transition to college
  • Serve as co-Chair of the University’s Diversity Council
  • Provide educational initiatives and programs for students, faculty, and staff promoting cross-cultural understanding (including RA training, classroom lectures, workshops, etc.)
  • Coordinate and collaborate with key student organizations to develop or implement periodic cultural events on campus such as celebrating Heritage Months, LGBT History Month, Women’s History, Yom Kippur, Ramadan, etc.

Community Engagement Duties

  • Work collaboratively with academic departments and community agencies to support curricular service learning programming
  • Develop partnerships with faculty to integrate service learning into academic courses and programs
  • Develop and implement reflective activities to maximize student learning following community service activities
  • Plan and conduct assessment of student life outcomes
  • Develop implement, and enforce policies related to service learning and community service activities (transportation, travel to sites, etc.)

Nonessential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist students and other guests who visit the office
  • Serve on an advisory committee with faculty, staff, and students
  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and university needs

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Required:

  • Master's Degree with 4-6 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Proficient at multi-tasking
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Must enjoy working with  college-aged students

  • Cognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in conditions - 75-100% of the time

Work Conditions

  • Work in office environment, involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
