Job Description

Working with the Fortius Lab Team, the Applied Biomechanist will be responsible for conducting biomechanical analyses within a laboratory and field setting, including walking and running gait, vertical and horizontal jump evaluations, and assessments of athletic movements, including change of direction. The Applied Biomechanist will be required to work flexibly to deliver to a variety of clients, including athletes, clinical referrals, and industry partners. The role encompasses data acquisition and processing, presenting findings in a way that is meaningful and accessible to different audiences, and being innovative in proposing and delivering novel modes of assessment and methods of reporting and interpreting results to inform interventions.

 

Responsibilities

Data Acquisition

  • Proficient with motion capture for gait analysis, jump testing, and other athletic assessments
  • Proficient with data capture for kinetic analysis for gait, jump, and other athletic assessments
  • Expertise and experience with force plate jump assessment protocols and data acquisition process
  • Experience and comfort working in both a laboratory and field setting
  • Familiar with relevant hardware – specifically, instrumented treadmill, AMTI force platforms, Qualisys motion capture, Delysys EMG
  • Experience and proficiency with software systems for acquiring kinetic and kinematic data, including Visual 3D

 

Data Processing

  • Extracting, exporting data for processing, including appropriate software tools to automate the process
  • Experience and proficiency with application of filters to raw data in preparation for processing
  • Proficient with coding to automate data processing
  • Experience and expertise with software tools for data processing, such as MatLab and others

 

Data Visualisation, Reporting, and Follow-Up

  • Able to present data and report relevant findings in a manner that is clear, accessible, and meaningful to the client
  • Capable of synthesising a range of metrics and findings from multiple assessments into a coherent summary of findings
  • Able to interpret findings and relate them in context for the client and their needs and objectives to best inform outcomes and interventions

 

Additional Duties

  • Entrepreneurial by nature and welcomes the challenge of growing a strong profitable practice and is comfortable working within and accountable to a business oriented environment
  • Collaborate with Applied Sport Science colleagues, clinicians in the sports medicine clinic and resident Strength and Conditioning coaches
  • Troubleshoot issues with equipment and software
  • Assist in the maintenance of biomechanical laboratory equipment
  • Contribute to the on-going initiatives of the Fortius Lab Team to create and conduct relevant research projects of the Fortius Lab that lead to innovative prevention and treatment interventions
  • Engage in recruiting participants for research projects in collaboration with industry partners

 

Internal and External Networks

  • Proactively engage with practitioners and associated staff across different disciplines within the facility
  • Contribute to education and professional development initiatives for Fortius and allied staff
  • Contribute to the delivery of clinics and workshops for community and external partners

Qualifications

  • M.Sc. degree in Applied Biomechanics, biomedical engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience working to provide biomechanical assessment and support in a practical setting
  • Experience working with athletic and clinical populations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information to a non-scientist audience in a way that is clear and meaningful
