Job Description

BROAD FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:


In partnership with the Executive Director’s overarching leadership of the Chapter’s entire revenue portfolio (approximately $8MM) and in collaboration with the Development Director, Community (Walk, Ride, Outreach, Marcom), the AED will be responsible for overseeing the management and financial growth of Gala, Golf and other Special Events. In addition, the AED oversees Chapter operations including annual budget development, forecasting, planning, finances and office processes. A thorough understanding of JDRF’s operations and financial policies, and procedures is essential, as is a solid background in relational fund development. The AED will be the relationship manager to key constituent accounts, with a strong emphasis on corporate, and will have a substantial working relationship with the local Board of Directors. This important Chapter leadership team role requires a strong, collaborative leader who is outcomes driven and who requires minimal supervision from the Executive Director, with whom he/she will be partnering to bring the chapter to new levels of success.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:

•    Working within JDRF’s volunteer-staff partnership environment, the Associate Executive Director will support and maintain the vision, mission, priorities, and guiding principles of JDRF.

•    In partnership with the Executive Director, manage the functioning of the daily operations.

•    Provide proactive partnership and support to the Executive Director, to help drive Chapter excellence, growth and execution. Serve as a thought partner, strategist, and executor in collaboration with ED’s vision.

•    Oversee the day-to-day management of key Core Program activity and additional duties as assigned, making certain that staff and volunteers are supported in the implementation of strategic and operational plans to drive fundraising priorities.

•    Directly supervise Office Manager; Sr. Development Manager, Social Events (Gala and Golf), and two Development Coordinators. Adjust accordingly when organization charts are revised due to Chapter evolution.

•    In collaboration with the ED and Nominating Committee, assist in the development and engagement of Board members in Chapter activities, as well as with the identification and cultivation of potential Board members. Develop content for key board activities including annual board orientation, and quarterly meetings, as needed.

•    Support ED and Donor Relations Officer in planning and execution major donor reception events, including donor research and stewardship planning and execution.

•    Support ED with National projects as needed.

•    Help build and manage Core Program, Social Events volunteer committees providing leadership, cultivation, acknowledgement, material support, and assistance in creating and implementing committee annual plans and desired outcomes.

•    Provide strategic direction and leadership for major Chapter external/community development activities.

•    Serve as staff partner to Corporate Development Chair on Board of Directors. Develop an account management system to improve engagement, retention and acquisition of corporate partners.

•    Assist, at times, in the recruitment and screening for chapter positions. When needed, assume interim responsibility for staffing vacant positions. If needed, coordinate training and orientation for new staff.

•    Represent the best interests, professionalism and integrity of JDRF in all activities and relationships through a unified message of the JDRF mission and a commitment to organizational standards and leadership by personal example.

•    Maintain a basic understanding of JDRF’s mission and research strategy.

•    Ensure the confidentiality and security of proprietary information.

•    Establish a network through which he/she represents the organization in professional societies/organizations.

•    Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Qualifications

•    5-10 years of progressively responsible and related fundraising and event experience with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory capacity.

•    Understanding and working knowledge of philanthropy within the Greater Bay landscape.

•    Understanding and knowledge of donor centered fundraising.

•    Demonstrated experience in donor retention and upgrade programs.

•    Demonstrated experience in planning, managing, implementing, and analyzing special events (primarily Gala, Golf, Walk and Ride) with proven success in executing on key performance indicators.

•    Volunteer management experience, especially around the staff-volunteer partnership.

•    Experienced in event committee development, succession planning and committee accountability.

•    Proficiency in non-profit and fiscal management and budget development. Works well within a matrix structure where more than one individual is providing guidance, feedback, counsel and support.


•    Understanding of computer systems and databases. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

•    Effectively multi-task, establishes priorities, and work in a fast paced environment. Highly efficient in time management and can meet deadlines under pressure.

•    Team player that has the ability to interface with all levels of staff and volunteers. Must develop, maintain, and utilize relationships. Capability to leverage relationships and negotiate agreements.

•    Excellent written, oral, and communication skills. Ability for presentation delivery, conveying ideas, and instructing effectively.

•    Superior active listening, observation, analytical, and problem recognition and solving skills. Exercise sound judgment.

•    Ability to work and make judgments independently and take initiative. Well disciplined and a self-starter that is extremely resourceful.

•    High capacity to assess the value, importance, and/or quality of activities and people.

•    Ability to travel locally required. Occasional overnight travel as needed.

•    Evening and weekend work required as needed.
