Assistant Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement - External Relations

Job Description

Summary:

The Assistant Director’s overall mission is to develop, implement, and evaluate a student affairs program focused on diversity, inclusion and community engagement for the purpose of student learning and development. This full-time, 12-month position reports to the Assistant Dean of Students for D.I.C.E.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative Duties

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Students for D.I.C.E on providing
    administrative support for the programs and vision of the office.
  • Train and supervise 2-3 work study students
  • Identifies grants and other funding opportunities for the office
  • Research “Best Practices” regarding topics of diversity, inclusion and community
    engagement

Diversity and Inclusion Duties

  • Coordinate and collaborate with key student organizations to develop or implement periodic cultural events on campus such as celebrating Heritage Months, LGBT History Month, Women’s History, Yom Kippur, Ramadan, etc.
  • Present in and out of classroom talks and/or facilitate student dialogues regarding diversity, inclusion and cultural competence
  • Serve as an advisor to the campus' multicultural student organizations
  • Assist with Queens recruitment and retention efforts, particularly as they pertain to historically underrepresented groups
  • Assist with New Student Orientation and RA training, particularly as they pertain to educational initiatives and cross-cultural understanding
  • Assist the graduate intern in the coordination of the L.E.A.D. Peer Mentoring Program

Community Engagement Duties

  • Manage and organize community engagement events/programs off campus such as a
    partnership with Sedgefield Elementary (Lunch Buddy, Reading Buddy and Pen Pal
    programs), Saturday Day of Service, and America Reads Program
  • Source appropriate community venues and develop appropriate partnerships with
    local non-profits and public agencies for both service learning
    opportunities and community service
  • Conduct site visits, develop Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs), and ensure safety
    standards are met
  • Organize and oversee an alternative break program for fall and spring breaks
  • Oversee an annual Welcome Week Non-Profit Volunteer and Internship Fair

Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet departmental and university needs
  • Assist students and other guest who visit the office
  • Serve on an advisory committee with faculty, staff, and students

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) or equivalent in experience (2-5 years) and education
  • High level of proficiency in computers and office software
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Proficient at multi-tasking
  • Problem solving skills
  • Must enjoy working with college-aged students

  • Cognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in conditions - 75-100% of the time

Additional Information

Work Conditions

  • Work in office environment, involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times. 
  • Work may require occasional evening and weekend hours.
