About Digital Divide Data (DDD)

Digital Divide Data (DDD) is a US-based non-profit, mission-driven enterprise with the goal of using technology and digital skills to bridge the divide between economically and socially marginalized youth and employment opportunities that lead to a sustainable and viable future. DDD identifies talented but underserved youth in Africa and Asia (Kenya, Cambodia, and Laos are the main centers) to enter formal employment, undergo professional training and skills development, and pursue tertiary education. Our headquarters are in New York, and we have over 1,500 employees across our operations in Kenya, Cambodia, and Laos.

About the program

The localization industry is growing fast, and the need for skilled Kirundi translators. We are looking for talents with great language skills in Kirundi, with the aim to equip them with the necessary competencies to build a career at Digital Divide Data in the exciting Localization industry.

Our Transforming Talent program provides learning opportunities to multilingual people, who will be leading the in-country team of linguists, facing clients, and owning the quality of his/her language.

Job Description

1. Translation

  • Translating and reviewing the assigned content according to the guidelines and prescribed due dates.
  • Few examples of the content: UI application strings for mobile apps, Help Center articles, Facebook’s Community Standards, Data Policy, Terms of Service etc.

2. Linguistic Reviews and quality assessment

  • Perform regular linguistic review of their own work as well as the work performed by other translators.
  • Perform quality checks on content they translated as well as content translated by other translators to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Track and monitor translation quality, flag potential quality issues and take actions to address them.
  • Make the final decisions in case of arbitration between translators and LQA reviewers

3. Loc Testing and A/B Testing

  • Regularly perform Localization testing (e.g. screenshot testing or Live testing) as per the task instructions/test plan.
  • Update the translation to correct all linguistic errors found during testing.
  • File bugs for all non-linguistic issues (truncations, font renderings, formatting, text alignment etc) and follow-up as necessary to ensure that these issues are resolved.
  • Help identify terms/strings to set up QTs (i.e. A/B Testing on translation) and provide translation variants for these QT experiments.

4. Create and maintain linguistic assets

  • Translate and/or review Facebook’s Glossary to ensure accuracy and appropriateness
  • Update the glossary as necessary (e.g. based on external feedback, LQA feedback, XFN feedback etc) and communicate these changes to the translators and internal team members (e.g. LM POC).
  • Perform necessary global clean-ups in case of glossary updates or as a result of LQA feedback, A/B testing etc.
  • Create and maintain a Language-specific style guide for your target language.

5. Communicate and collaborate

  • Collaborate with i18n (e.g. LPM, LM, VM, TPM) and non-i18n (e.g. regional policy, comms) teams as well as external vendor teams (e.g. translators and LQA reviewers) as required throughout the localization process.
  • Proactively flag potential or existing issues and regularly follow-up to ensure timely resolution
  • Make sure to keep appropriate POCs informed about potential or actual delays, quality issues, and share regular updates about the progress of work
  • Participate in 1:1 or group/team meetings with various stakeholders.
  • Communication channels include emails, workplace, workchat, Google
  • Docs/sheets/slides, Quip, Bluejeans/VC etc. are not limited to these.

Qualifications

  • University degree preferably in Linguistics, Journalism or Mass Communication
  • 100% native fluency in the target language.
  • At least 3 years of experience in translation and localization.
  • Familiarity with the target language culture and trends.
  • Knowledge of CAT tools and translation quality management.
  • Experience localizing apps and mobile content (e.g. translation of websites and apps)
  • Familiarity with Facebook’s translated content.
  • Strong linguistic and analytical skills to make critical judgments regarding the translation quality.
