Job Description

Nazarbayev University is a new Western style, English-speaking university established in 2011. The University is well-endowed with substantial support from the government and aspire to be a top research University in the region. Significant research infrastructure, including a new research building and advanced facilities, has been established. The University is expected to grow from a student population of 5000 this year to 8000 by 2025 with a significant increase in the number of graduate students.

 

Nazarbayev University's School of Engineering and Digital Sciences invites applications for a full-time Head of Department in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) to begin in September/October 2019. The successful applicant is expected to provide leadership in all aspects of the department including the academic programs as well as the research activities of the department. The next few years will be crucial for the CEE Department. Further resources are expected to be injected in support for both undergraduate teaching and research for the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences. The Head of the CEE Department will be responsible for guiding and overseeing the Department to ascertain excellence in both learning and teaching as well as research within the Department.  The Head of Department manages the academic staff and teaching assistants and is the primary responsible person for human resource management. In view of the expansion of the Department and the School, the Head of Department will be involved heavily in capacity building in terms of infrastructure and staff. The Head of Department is a standing member of the School Board and reports to the Dean of the School.

Required qualifications: a Ph.D. degree from a reputed university in Civil and Environmental Engineering or a closely related field. The successful candidate should have significant academic leadership capabilities and possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills. He/she should demonstrate relevant experience in academic program development. The Head of Department is encouraged to participate in research and teaching activities.

Initial appointment is on a 3-year renewable contract and subsequent appointments can be 5-year/3-year renewable subject to annual performance reviews.
